TRANSCRIPTION:

Hello and welcome to the Thrive With Money Podcast! My name is Charlotte Darr and I’m a financial counselor, founder and CEO of Save Live Thrive™, and financial feminist on a mission to provide millennial women with the information, tools, and confidence they need to own their financial futures.

As a financial feminist, I believe in the financial equality of women, which means that this podcast is going to be loaded with information on topics like paying off debt, organizing your finances, achieving financial goals, building wealth, and becoming financially literate.

And, seriously, I cannot BELIEVE that I just clicked “record” on this very first podcast episode!!

Creating this podcast for you is honestly a dream come true, and I wanted to start Episode 0 by saying how grateful I am that you are tuning in and joining me on this podcasting journey!

MY BACKGROUND

So, a little bit about me and my background, one of the reasons that I’m so passionate about personal finance is because I used to be terrible with money.

Like… absolutely terrible.

I was racking up debt and spending above my means, which means that I am all too familiar with how stressful it is to feel like your money is out of control and spiraling into places that you don’t want it to.

And what is pretty interesting (I think) is that my background didn’t start in personal finance. In fact, my undergraduate degree is in music education and vocal performance.

That’s right—I’m a classically trained opera singer!

About a year before graduating with my undergraduate degree, I calculated my numbers and realized that I was in $78,511 of debt between student loans, auto loans, and credit cards. After learning this number, I honestly don’t think I slept for a few weeks because I had such a huge knot in my chest thinking about how I was going to pay off this debt as a music teacher and professional musician.

And, after a couple of weeks, I thought “f*** this, I can’t just sit here not knowing what to do with my money.” And that ultimately started me down the path of learning as much as I possibly could about personal finance.

Since making that decision, I’ve been able to increase my net worth by over $53,000 on a teacher and freelance musician’s income. And I think that’s an important thing to talk about because everyone’s personal finance journey is different, everyone’s income is different, and therefore their results are going to be different. And I am just so passionate about sharing what my journey has looked like on a lower income and salary to help other people see the things that they can do with their money.

With these steps that I was taking, I started to feel this incredible transformation that having a solid financial education was having on my life. I started feeling more freedom with my decisions, I had a significant reduction in stress because I was able to do things like build an emergency fund, pay off my debt, take mini vacations (I LOVE to go backpacking, hiking, camping), and I could order a cup of coffee from my favorite coffee shop on the weekends without feeling guilty about it because I knew that my money was doing things that I wanted it to do.

This freedom and reduction of stress ultimately came from me being able to live and enjoy my life while still working towards my financial goals.

After a period of time, I realized that I was not the only women that grew up without a financial education. And once this realization sunk in, I started blogging about personal finance, and that ultimately led to the creation of Save Live Thrive™ which is now a financial literacy business that has helped hundreds of women take control of their money, build their financial education, and start down a path to use money as a tool to build the life of their dreams.

I am SO excited to share this podcast with you, and I cannot wait to talk more about personal finance with you from here on out.
